Spain and its archipelagos of the Canary Islands is the first among the best destinations in Europe for accommodation for cheap family holidays, according to research.

TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel community, polled 2,400 of its members about cheap family holidays and the results suggested that eight out of the top ten accommodation options are in the Canary Islands, mainland Spain, or the Balearics .

The top hotel in the list was on the island of Lanzarote, with second place going to a hotel in Tenerife and other establishments in Mallorca, Menorca and Fuerteventura making up the top five.

Other locations to get the seal of approval by the poll included Lloret de Mar in Catalonia, Spain and Belek in Turkey.

More than half of the people polled by TripAdvisor said money was the biggest barrier to family holidays and nearly a third said staying on budget was the most difficult aspect.

Nearly a third of British travellers said they plan to take more family holidays in the next 12 months than in the last year, while a third said they will spend more on their next family trip than on the last.
